(Re)Introducing Taproot Sprouts!

Taproot’s Sprouts Morning Program is designed to give young children continuous, positive, immersive experiences with the earth in wonderful natural areas around Iowa City, in an atmosphere of kindness, awareness, respect, and friendship. Each day’s plan is built around copious amounts of self-guided outdoor play in a wide variety of natural settings. Sprouts teachers Elesa, Zac, Laura, Dan, and others are always alert for the spontaneous lessons that Mother Nature presents. In addition to nature-focused learning, Sprouts teachers provide gentle, timely, and insightful support to help young children learn about their own powers, effectively communicate their feelings and needs, and peacefully solve conflicts.

True to the Taproot way, the Sprouts will be outdoors in all but the harshest weather, and a big part of our job on tough weather days is supporting and teaching the Sprouts how to suit up. Sometimes it can be challenging, but these experiences truly do “build character,” strengthen a child’s resilience and confidence, and show them how to enjoy nature in many types of weather.

As such, parents will need to watch the forecast and make sure Sprouts have adequate clothing and gear. Zac and Elesa are available to help and advise parents if needed.

And although we do want to teach kids to be tough and resilient, we also know that having a negative, miserable experience does not help achieve that goal! We won’t be forcing kids to stay outside if they’re clearly having a bad time! Indoor options include the ICPL, rec centers, and the UI Museum of Natural History.

In addition to weather-appropriate clothing, Sprouts bring a hearty and healthy lunch. We will provide a simple, nutritious, and tasty snack each day.

Potty training and potty communication abilities are very helpful in Sprouts, but not an absolute requirement. Part of the Sprouts experience is learning how to go “nature potty,” and this is a skill parents can also help kids practice outside of Sprouts!

Taproot does not turn away children if their families cannot pay the tuition. If finances are a barrier to your child participating in Taproot, please contact Zac to work out an affordable solution.
